April 24th, 2009
If we were a figure of speech, we’d be an oxymoron. A jumbo shrimp of a hippie chick soul wrapped up in a shiny city package. It’s a bit confusing to want to wander around barefoot sipping champagne. We want to hike and then eat sushi. Go paddle-surfing and then dancing in stilettos.
We just came back from our beachy vacation, all blissed out and sun-kissed and happy. We spent last week living in a perpetual screensaver: palm trees, sunsets, a salty, warm breeze. We rode in the back of a truck on a mountainous road for three hours, with friends literally in tow. Pearl Jam in our headphones. Bandana to tame the mane. Dirt dispelled by jumping into natural waterfall pools along the way. Pass us our hair straightener, lip gloss, and a pretty sarong at the end of the day, and we were up for some serious fun. Sounds terribly nice, no? Luxe hippie in the city, cha-ching! |

Beat the Odds
Why go to the Kentucky Derby for a refreshing Mint Julep when there’s one right around the corner? Happily, we know of a sassy Southport boutique that may not serve liquor, but it serves up big-time style.
The second of its kind (the original Julep is located in Lincoln Park), Mint Julep offers ultra-hip clothing and accessories at totally reasonable prices. The clothing includes colorful maxi dresses, swingin’ spring jackets and funky floral skirts from names like Susana Monoco, Tulle, BB Dakota and Bobi. Our favorite thing about this store though is the jewelry, almost all of which is from local designer Kristen Amato’s line “K Amato.” From delicate filigree to bright and colorful beads and gemstones, Amato’s line includes earrings, necklaces, and bracelets that we just must have. Another bonus—the staff is totally friendly and helpful, which makes the Julep experience even more fun (as if shopping wasn’t fun enough already).
So the odds are high that you’ll find stylish looks this spring at Mint Julep. In fact, we’d say it’s a sure bet!

Get Knitty With It
We’re lovely gals, but sometimes we just want to stitch and bitch. And though we missed out on the big knitting crazy of 2005, it’s never to late to pick up a new hobby, right? Especially one that you can cocktail with.
At the Knitting Niche, everyone from novice to expert will find inspiration for all things knitting. While the store specializes in hand-painted and kettle-dyed yarns, they also offer a variety of cozy mohairs, bright bouclés, funky metallic threads and everything in between. Perhaps the thing that really sets it apart from other knitting stores though is the impressive selection of buttons—from elegant abalone pieces to colorful fruit-shaped fasteners. Sassy, brassy owner Mary-Ann Parisi can help you with anything from yarn to patterns, and even offers private instruction. (Ask about group classes and seminars, too.)
Now that we know about The Knitters Niche, we can finally start that knitting circle we’ve been talking about for the past five years. And with our crazy schedules, if we get started now, we just may have that new DIY sweater come next winter!

Bette Davis Eyes
Hazel has always been one of our favorite eye colors (remember our colored contacts phase?) but now it’s also one of our favorite gift shops.
Hazel, the adorable Ravenswood boutique, offers everything from a wide variety of greeting cards and custom party invitations to stylish caps, funky handbags, interesting watches, geometric cufflinks and even flowers! Need a gift for the friend who has everything? How about a glittery Catwoman piggy bank? (Yes, we just said a glittery Catwoman piggy bank.) In addition, beautiful jewelry by independent designers is artfully displayed throughout the store, and we are obsessed with yummy candles lining the store’s shelves and colorful Hobo wallets tucked under display cases. Need some help deciding on what fabulous thing to buy first? The knowledgeable staff will help you select the perfect present.
It’s a good thing, too, because while we may not have any friends with upcoming birthdays, we’re always up for getting a little something for ourselves!

Eye of the Beholder
Once, in a martini-induced stupor, our $400 designer glasses fell off of the top of our heads and into le toilette (after using it—eww). After taking care of some unsavory business, we vowed then and there to never again perch our precious specs in such a precarious manner.
Rather than don the granny-chain, we bought a chic eyeglass case from Oktak. Available in a ton of cool prints, these pretty protectors will keep your peep-wear stowed in style!

Wishful Thinking
Whether we’re holding our breath through a tunnel or blowing out birthday candles, we never miss a chance to make a wish. Sadly, those occasions don’t pop up every day, so we’re treating ourselves to a present from Flying Wish Paper.
With their whimsical kits, you can make a wish whenever you want. Just write down your thoughts, light up the paper tube and—voila!—your dreams will come true. Or at least that’s what we’re wishing for.

Wine Lover
We have such fond memories of the time we spent living in Tuscany during college. Especially that one weekend spent touring vineyards with Paolo—sipping wine, stomping grapes… and more. We’ve been wine-lovers and firm believers in vino-therapy ever since.
So imagine our delight in finding the Chianti and Grape Seed Crush body scrub from Bella Lucce. Made with crushed grape seeds, olive oil and red wine, it polishes our skin to a rosy glow. Bellisima!
