January 23rd, 2009
Whoa! Big week. Some really, truly big things happened. MLK Day and a brand spankin’ new president! Typically, we steer clear of all topics even remotely taboo (like politics and religion) as our readers make up a bevy of different affiliations and beliefs. It’s like using a tanning bed or eating at Long John Silver’s—we just won’t do it.
But clearly we couldn’t bring you this issue without a mention of a ginormous change of scenery at our nation’s capital and the memory of a historical figure who practiced peace. So here’s to an exciting time in American history, important figures in society, and a changing economy just around the corner! |

Thrift is The Thing
We’ve always kinda been on the fringe. Like the home-schooled kid who lived on the outskirts of town, and wore hemp necklaces for far too long. We fancy ourselves a bit hipster every once in a while, but it’s mainly because we listen to Fleet Foxes.
Who will save our lost silly little sad souls? The good local ladies of Thrift, that’s who. Jenny and Victoria, two former Art Institute students, pair their vintage-obsessed fashion savvy to create a brand that fuses hand-reconstructed and nature-friendly hand-painted garments. Each piece is one of a kind, and supports an eco-friendly initiative in recreating something that already exists. By wearing an item designed by this fab twosome, you literally become a walking piece of art. Plus, you’re supporting local talent and will gain an instant boost of sass!
Check out their wild colors and patterns, sailor-inspired jumper and sweet-as-can-be paisley bubble dress. But catch them while you can, before the slightly odd kid next door snatches up the rest of the designs!

Very Wise, Young Grasshopper
It's official—green is the new black. Everyone's going gaga for environmentally friendly goods and we are no exception! Joining the ranks of local eco stores like Pivot Boutique or 360SEE, Grasshopper 510 is stocked with plenty of pretty house wares, jewelry and bags that look just as good as they are for the Earth.
We love the Ashley Watson bags made from recycled jackets—the leather in her chic wallets and clutches is just so super soft. Local candle-maker Colette was another fave—between “Cupcake” and “Simply Kumquat”we were in scent haven! Hop to Grasshopper for everything from new kitchen plates (fun and sophisticated!) to great calling-card bracelets from Brazilian designer Mana Bernardes. Not totally in the know on the whole eco scene? Not a problem. Informative placards tell customers exactly how the material has been reused or how it was helpful for the environment.
Knowing that we're doing good deeds for our planet makes buyer's remorse a thing of the past, and we have to say, we couldn't be happier!

Sassy Mama
Some days we resemble a sloppy coed. You know. Highlighted hair. Roots. Smudged makeup. Sweat pants. Bar tar on the bottom of our shoes. Perhaps looking a little “Walk of Shame”-ish. It’s just that after a fifty-hour work week (in heels and biz casual, no less), we like bumming around a bit! And perhaps having a few Friday night cocktails.
And bum it we did, as we trudged out of the cold and into buzzing Sassoon at Water Tower. They keep a cut department and a color department, to ensure each stylist and colorist can fully immerse themselves in their craft. Sassoon has been an industry leader for years, and their craftsmanship and amazing staff speak volumes. Our poodle-like hair was sculpted to a new shape. A new texture. A new level of sexiness by Sassoon’s brilliant stylist, Marilyn. And the color? The color! We’re no longer a dull, brassy blonde—the new, luminous blonde by Nicole is literally the best we’ve ever had.
Boost your self confidence and style in just one visit. Ooh, la la!

Fetty Fetty Good
The Adventures of Timmy the Tooth actually had very few lessons on tooth-care. The straight-to-video morally-minded musical puppet series was more about not being afraid of thunder and lightning.
About as nonsensical as pairing a heart and a big ole fatty gold tooth on a string, and callin’ it a day. But ya know what? We like it. We love Fetty of Brooklyn and their dark, scary, in-your-face-but-still-delicate-and-faux-girly style. Rock Fetty and let your mysterious, bad self go wild!

Boogie Nights
We can’t help but notice the onset of the “natural hair” look everywhere, evocative of a 70’s, California-cool, sun goddess-like vibe. Frankly, we can’t appropriate it—our dishwater blonde is not anywhere near vintage Farrah Fawcett.
But we can go the groovy route in terms of silky, interesting garments from Snoozer Loser. It’s a strange and oddly beautiful online shop, with natural and comfortable-looking fashion. We may artificially enhance our ’do, but miss this sultry 70’s trend? Dream on!

Mine, All Mine!
There are few things in life more glamorous than having something custom made, like a wedding gown or a Ferrari. Or say, a new bag from Freddy & Ma!
In addition to their own collection—including the Marianna bag, a clutch we totally covet for its chunky, oversized wonderful-ness—you can design your own clutch or tote with dozens of print and color choices. We’re thinking of a clutch in purple and brown houndstooth… stay tuned!
