  CHICAGO PICKS
life + style in the Windy City
June 20th, 2008

At one point late last summer, we realized we hadn’t left the city. At all. In months. We didn’t have a reason to—we were as happy as this season’s Cubs fans. But we figured visiting some relatives was perhaps in the cards. Yes, we would travel to the ’burbs for dinner, and stay the night.

And it was lovely. Lovely and… quiet. We called our brother and told him about the pleasant rhythm of crickets chirping, and rustling leaves so softly symphonic in the trees. He asked: were we under the influence? We quickly denied being in any way influenced, and then poured ourselves another glass of wine, settling in for a night of chatting with our grandparents. Moral of the story? There isn't one. But see below for a nice summer drink idea from Plan B’s Bar + Kitchen to enjoy during your happy summer moments!

A La Moda

As veteran, eagle-eyed and high-heeled shoppers, we know the difference between a trend and a fad. We also know that our handbag should be classic but modern, with the ability to transition from the el to the office to drinks at the Drake. But sometimes aligning our fashion stars with what’s available—and within our credit limits—can be tricky. Are we asking a lot? Of course. But Moda Italiana delivers—and then some.

As the nation’s exclusive retailer of Pratesi items—think buttery-soft leather, streamlined functionality, and envying glances from friends and strangers—Moda makes sure that we’ll stand out in the crowd. (Even more than we already do. Ahem.)  The fashion-forward and eco-conscious use of solely organic tannins results in exquisite, unique shades like the cognac-hued Sera purse.

And to further legitimize our love, Moda Italiana carries practical, masculine pieces that even the most macho dude in our lives would be proud to have on his arm. Hey, we can’t be his only eye candy!

Sam I Am

We love the Gold Coast as much as the next gal—if nothing else, it’s the quickest route to Rush Street—but the abundance of franchise and chain stores leaves us cold. If we wanted yet another big-box fashionasium, we’d hit the mall and pick up cheap shelving at IKEA.

So we’re pleased as (spiked) punch to pop into Samantha Chicago, the store with everything—except a dozen other locations. Nope, this is a one-time offer, ladies, and we’re snapping up as much as we can. We happily indulge in Hanky Panky’s line of lace camis and thongs, Genetic Denim cigarette jeans, and even Havaianas for when we want to wear our Ya-Ya Love tank with a pair of flops and call it a day (on the beach).
Since Chicago Picks is all about giving props to what’s unique to our fair city, nothing makes us happier than supporting a local retailer—and one who’s taken up residence in the swankiest part of town? Gotta love that.

MmmmBBop

When we have friends over, we get entirely too excited about what appetizers to serve and how much to force-feed our loved ones. The minute they sit down, we’re pouring wine and spooning dip.

Apparently, BBop Lounge is our doppelganger (albeit with sleeker style). As soon as we got settled, our waiter was pouring wine and presenting us with a sample platter of staple Korean dishes, on the house. We’re glad he did, too, because without it we would have missed out on the addicting cucumber kimchee. The space has tables for groups as well as a bar with make-your-own food stations—the main allure of BBop. All the dishes were perfect, and we could have eaten at least half a dozen more vegetable pancakes. Trust us; order a round!

BBop is BYO pending its liquor license (last we checked) and our only worry for our favorite new doppelganger is its hidden location beneath the Sedgwick brown line stop. So BBop on in, dears. And we repeat: vegetable pancakes for all!

Your Arsenal

We're easy. Put some Morrissey on a mix tape and give us a gift certificate for shopping and you'll discover we're the most charming, easy-going gals in town. One of our favorite pastimes is checking out of reality, putting Viva Hate on repeat and drooling over the latest finds at Bona Drag, an awesome online boutique.

Happiness is achievable, and it comes in spontaneous purchases like studded ballet slippers, knee-length gladiator sandals and a week's worth of jumpers and skirts that send us back to 1992.

Less Than a Handful

We love our luxurious gym, but seriously hate being seen there. Ponytail + sweatiness + sports bra = fugly.

That was pre-Sportssiere, our new hott sports bra by Handful that makes us feel sexy— like Sporty Spice—on the treadmill. We didn't have side boobs or mono boob. In fact, The Girls looked so good we think we’ll even wear it solo! One more month of kickboxing and these abs will be ready!
