  CHICAGO PICKS
life + style in the Windy City
May 30th, 2008

Recently we were talking to one of our friends about the whole dating game.Which personally we find to be worse than the six years we had braces. Anyway, he told us how he's been seeing this girl, and things are going really well. In fact, he’s really excited about her—and totally nervous. The reason? He's quite shy. Which leads to awkwardness. Which leads to him hoping she still likes him. Like Lloyd Dobler. Or Evan from Superbad

He hasn't quite figured out how to say "hello" or "goodbye" yet. A kiss? A hug? A weird high-five/half-pat on the back? And he’s managed to tell her “I’ll call you tomorrow or the day after that…or something” which is simultaneously tragic and funny. Seriously, why is dating so difficult?

We think perhaps there’s someone who can help with such topics, dear readers! Forward this issue of Chicago Picks to 5 friends and cc picks@chicagopicks.com for a chance to win a free reading from the fabulous clairvoyant, Sonja Grace!

Hopelessly Devotte-d

Sorry Danny Zuko, but we’ve fallen head over Achilles heel, and this spring, Greece is the word. What to wear on the way to the forum? While it’s believed that true Roman gladiators fought barefoot, their eponymous footwear is so ubiquitous this season you’d swear you were on the set of Spartacus.

So add a dose of coliseum-chic with a pair worth going into battle for, and pair them with a sassy short Lara Miller dress. You'll find them at Bucktown’s P.45. Designer Nancy Kim’s Devotte line exudes Greek-chic in the most covetable way. For an aspiring Aphrodite, her demure Shirley sandal features a flat heel and white leather ruffles that lend a feminine flair. If, however, you’re more of a Spartan shopper, the Helena offers a timeless leather style with a row of fish-scale-like front panels, and antiqued pyramid studs. Top it all of with a Maren and Ruby perfume bottle necklace, and you'll soon be the hottest girl at school, err … around.

This spring, P45 is the one that we want… tell us about it, stud.

Monaco Magic

We have always dreamt of being European-chic, sexy, classic, and refined. Our main muse? Princess Grace of Monaco. Who just happened to be European-chic, sexy, and the definition of classic and refined.

We have finally found our Monaco—in Hotel Monaco. It transformed us into Princess Grace—well, sorta—and only for an evening. We highly recommend the KN Tranquility Suite, surrounded with the Karen Neuburger brand (one of Oprah's favorites). You can wrap yourself in one of her cozy animal-print robes, pour a glass of wine or cup of tea, and snuggle into one of the gigantic bay window seats overlooking dazzling city views. The opulently designed suite is breathtakingly gorgeous (think silver sequined pillows and shimmery wallpaper). Bring your girlfriends, your mom, or someone who would truly appreciate a night of ethereal elegance to share this
with you.

We promise that you will feel like a princess—even for one night. The Hotel Monaco is our new Happy Place, ferreals—
full of magic and regal richness!

Amazing Grace

We’ve reached the point where we can predict Hollywood meltdowns. Right now, we want Miley to just keep being Miley… but  fame is a tricky thing! We like to think we’re a little bit intuitive, so if we can plausibly predict a very likely phenomena, there are surely people who sense a heckuva lot more!

Sonja Grace is one of those people. She has brought her talent for clairvoyance to Chicago, and she’s no fly-by-night psychic. She's consulted with spiritual leaders, celebrities and regular Janes as well as being a keynote speaker for the Great Women’s Speakers group (GreatWomenSpeakers.com). Grace's strength is in interpreting the past, present and future, including the healing of emotional and physical problems. She is a clairvoyant and counselor, and brings immediate stability and clarity to her clients.

Sonja receives messages from guiding angels, relatives and pets—in this world and those who have passed on. She even spent time with us, sharing information about our ultimate purpose, our relationships, and how we lead with our heart instead of our gut. Sonja is a bright light. You'll be glad you called.

The Solution for Stink

Girls, let’s be honest, shall we? Putting all bathroom humor aside, there are times when duty, ahem, calls.

The day after Cubs game benders. Exotic, ethnic dinners. PMS. Catch our doo-doo drift? But we’re still not gonna tell people about it when we've got it!  So do yourself a favor—tote along Just a Drop personal  odor eliminator in the travel-pouch size. Just one drop in the bowl before you go eliminates 98% of personal odors—no one will know you're not fresh as a daisy!

Music is Our Boyfriend

Would we be groupies? Possibly. But not to hook up with famous hipsters. We truly dig the music, Bebe Buell-style.

So we're thinking a cool screen print of one of our fave bands may make for a nice update in the apartment, post-spring cleaning. Chicagoan artist Jay Ryan started making posters for his band, his friends' bands and the clubs where they played. Now he’s working for all the big names and tons of festivals. Cheap and totally original—better than groupiedom any day!

Haute Mama

Having little ones does not necessarily mean mom jeans, frizzy hair, and the whole Breederville bit.

In fact, with so many trendy maternity options these days, it's gotten much easier to be a milf. Gone are the days of pastel floral numbers as diaper bags. And thanks to Chicago designer Suzanne Kopulos and her line of Boujie Baby Couture, you can look as stylish as you are doting. The bags will be available this summer; check the website for details!
