Some people are good at everything. They are the “Charlotte Yorks” of the world—sweet, sensible and kind. They have perfect hair, no matter the weather. They have perfect, creaseless trench coats. They wear heels and don't stumble, even when tipsy. Their dogs don't ever seem to bark and their manicures don't chip. See, we have friends like that. And we love them. And we learn from them. And they are the best in the resourcefulness/dependability department. But mostly, we are just in awe.
Because we are perpetually late. Always breaking things (wine glasses, cell phones, shoe heels, car parts, etc.). Haphazardly running around shops and restaurants, trying out all sorts of goodies while attempting to not be too awkward or clumsy. But lately we have come to find that we are definitely doing something right. Especially when other Chicago publications seem to be covering some of the same niches that we do, after we’ve scooped them. It is true—we’ve seen ideas from the Picks circulating around town. While we may not be the biggest, we are (we think) one of the brightest and best! |

We Dig Pivot
Some days, we totally nail a hot outfit. Other days, we come home in a hot tranny heap. It's six of one, half dozen of the other though, 'cuz we'll always have our smarts. We've also come to realize that being stylish can mean being socially conscious.
Fortunately for us (and Mother Earth) we found Pivot. Owner Jessa Brinkmeyer’s wide array of eco-friendly fashion exemplifies green going glam. Such as the iridescent champagne cocktail skirt, or the leather-lite, ostrich-print carryall. Pivot sends the stereotypical hippie humdrum clothing straight into the recycling bin. And not to worry, there’s a great selection of daily duds as well—trust us, once you slip on Del Forte’s sleek straight-leg jeans, you’ll develop a new appreciation for organic denim. And there’s a certain delectable mystery about note cards made from swatches of discarded T-shirts.
The boutique is a standout on Fulton Market Street, nestled amidst the West Loop’s contemporary art and interior design galleries. It’s the exclusive Chicago retailer of lines like Bahar Shahpar and Habitude, so you can fight the good fight while being fashion-forward. We can’t think of a better bargain than that!

Our Own Private Candy Land
As much fun as shopping can be, sometimes the traffic, the pushy customers and the frustration of not finding what we want all add up to… well, the exact opposite of fun.
But thank the heavens and Willy Wonka for the one place that always makes us happy and never fails to turn up something we crave. Candyality recently opened along Southport, and it is sure to please every tastebud and sweet tooth you have. The shop is a literal candy land of sweets. It stocks everything from giant lollipops to thrice-chocolate coated Whoppers to retro candy bars (remember Oh Henry! bars?) and old-school treats (MoonPies, anyone?)
Terese, the cute-as-can-be owner, adores her customers and loves pairing personalities with favorite candies. Her pick? Growing up it was Jelly Bellies, of which she has a delightfully full stock, but now it’s whatever floats her boat on any given day. After all, how could you pick a favorite amidst tubs and towers of all things sweet and tasty?

Swerve Right In
We love to be pampered. Come on, admit it. Inherent in every woman is a desire to sit back, relax with a glass of vino, and get plumped and petted, princess-style.
And that is exactly the kind of treatment we get every time we walk through Swerve Salon’s doors. The staff is young, hip and friendly, with zero haughtiness (a major plus). The space makes us want to move in—lofted ceilings, exposed beams and brick and tons of light. But the best part? The services offered, all so reasonably priced we did a double take on the Old Town locale. Besides the stellar cuts and color Swerve offers, the salon also specializes in custom facials and, our personal favorite, Brazilian hair straightening, a surefire way to tame curls without completely torching your locks.
Head there now to help the très friendly staffers (Emma is our girl!) fly to Redken’s NYC headquarters for exclusive insider lessons on all things beauty, which will only make you fall more in love with Swerve’s incredible and undeniable expertise. Did we mention how sexy your new 'do will be? Yep, traffic-stopping. Call now!

The Lady is a Tramp
We have a classic Louis bag and a double-C Chanel. They were some of our first big purchases when we first went to Europe. From a street vendor.
We love fashion as much as the next Kate, Lily or Victoria. But we like being able to afford traveling and grub 'n' pubbin', too. We also favor true originality and a cool unique aesthetic—like Nancy Phan’s handbags. The detailing (gold pony buttons!) and artful attitude (the robot zip pouch!) will surely carry us to Bangladesh and beyond.

The Yes Woman
We’d heard tales about YesStyle.com. Of its magnitude, selection and radically affordable prices—but we had no idea what we were missing. Now we proudly declare ourselves "Yes Women" for this site!
This ginormous site features thousands of compelling pieces from fashion-forward meccas like Hong Kong and South Korea. Thanks to their low prices, you won’t have to choose between the earthy-chic jackets and the sexy peep-toe pumps—you can snag both! Spend $150 (trust us, not difficult), and shipping is free!

The Cupcake Has It
Up until about a week ago, we didn't realize something was missing. And then, boom!, we were like, okay something is definitely up. Something is amiss. Was it time for a soul-searching dip into Scientology? No, too drastic. Perhaps a whirly-go at one of those scary speed-dating events? Definitely not.
And then, ah-ha! We realized what it was. It was cupcake earrings. We needed handmade cupcake earrings from Rocker Jewlz. Who knew these even existed? But now that we know, and you do too, can you picture anything cuter and sweeter than a pair of these lovelies?

Barrel of Monkeys
Roald Dahl is one of our very favorites. Right up there with Shel, Dr. Seuss, Tina Fey, and Amy Sedaris. His colorful language and imagery are masterful showcases of a simply divine and creative mind. Not only did he pen "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" and "Matilda," but he also wrote adult stories that are equally wacky and clever!
What: A reading of “George Porgy” and other stories by Roald Dahl
When: Saturday, April 5, 8 pm
Where: The Annoyance Theatre & Bar, 4830 N. Broadway
