life + style to you
in the Windy City

January 25th, 2008
Yep, It's still winter. And we at Chicago Picks will not let the doldrums get the best of us. Will not! Even though this may go on for months. But as they say, April snowstorms bring May flowers. Or something like that. So we’ll keep being our cute lil' snowbunny selves in fur-trimmed boots, and wait patiently for those first blades of grass to pop up between cracks in the city sidewalks.
Luckily for us, our passion for fashion never really wavers (well, except for the weekend-brunching-Uggs-and-sweatpants thing—it's tragic, we know, but it’s uber-comf). We can find reasons to shop no matter what the weather. We’re still so into the whole skyscraper-high hemline and spiked patent heels thing. And that colorful 80's punk-glam-rock thing Gwen and Rhianna do so well. And what about the Olivia Newton John-ish shiny black leggings (as opposed to the cotton-poly blend) look? Saucy! We love it. And we will find a way to wear it under our coats. |

Tribeca Treasure Trove
True or false? A) Tribeca is a ridiculously trendy Big Apple 'hood. B) Tribeca is a ridiculously hot Windy City boutique. C) Retail Therapy is good for the heart, soul, mind, body and overall happy meter, especially after a breakup. Did you pick “true” for all of the above? Ding ding ding! Right on, sweet thang.
Head over there on one of those days—the ones when you want to belt out, "Every now and then I fall apart!" Step foot in the shop, do a once-over, and using newfound Tribeca-inspired strength, resist letting out the whole "and I need you now tonight, and I need you more than ever" part. Tribeca is just what the doctor ordered to cure the heartbreak blues. All in the name of James Jeans, BCBG dresses, Michael Stars tanks, bags, scarves and jewelry galore.
Just four months old, Tribeca is generating major buzz as the new queen bee on the block. It’s certainly one of our favorite miracle workers for workplace woes, relationship riffs, or just a sweet little mid-week pick-me-up!

Totally Nekkit
Nude? Now that you mention it, we do love to parade about wearing nothing but a sly smile and an air of self-satisfaction. But alas, we can't grin and bare it all the time—our fan club of one is big enough already, thank you very much. And we do prefer to stay just this side of the law.
For those occasions when we want to be in style—and not in trouble—we hit up New'D. Browsing here gets us excited about wearing clothes all over again. We’re hungry like the wolf for their sharp, seductive threads. Black suede boots with rhinestone fleur-de-lis garner just the right amount of extra attention, and beg to be paired with the Cristo jewelry in the showcase. We could easily fill our closet with their eclectic ensemble pieces—check out the vintage and “lightly worn” selection (so affordable!).
Everything here is so carefully chosen, with the perfect mix of in-your-face fashion and come-hither casual, that shopping in the New'D is a kind of exhibitionism that makes us feel a little fashion-freaky!

Tiaras & Candy
We love to snoop around and peruse the homes of friends and lovers. It's partly the thrill of the hunt, partly our voyeuristic nature, and partly the result of our pre-teen fascination with Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy. What can we say? We fancied ourselves the neighborhood crime-watch as young girls.
Childhood imaginations aside, we were gleefully consumed with the opening and inspecting of all the overstuffed drawers, jewelry cases, tabletops and benches at Komoda. With such a kaleidoscopic selection, milling through their finds is like uncovering buried treasures. Some of the standouts included Komoda's handmade glass-buckled belts by KiKu and their collection of vegetarian bags and purses by Matt & Nat. And be sure to ask about their exotic plant seedlings, pick up some old-school candies and treat yourself to a crowd-pleasin' mood ring.
When you need a one-stop shop that’s also a place to revisit your past, visit Komoda. It’s no mystery why this fabulous find can bring such delight for an entire morning, afternoon, evening or night!

Crazy Beautiful
We love the ugly/beautiful. Take for example an upside-down grunge tunic. Sounds hideous, doesn't it? But on closer inspection, it's actually pretty genius—something a French editrix might rock on her day off.
We're smitten and already plan to wear this with our footless tights and booties this winter. BTW, it's made with 95 percent bamboo—talk about eco-suave!

All That Glitters
We're very particular when it comes to jewelry—give us gold! There's something so decadent about it, and it looks great with our skin tone. So when we spied this gorgeous piece by jewelry designer Keri D'Angelo, it knocked our socks off.
Three delicate golden chains on one side connect to a single chain by a trio of yellow sapphires at the base of the neck, and then languidly drape downward. So sexy!

Dear Diary
Today, Chris wore the same thing he wears every Tuesday: a Vision Street Wear T-shirt with jams and checkered Vans. In science class, he told me I better move my paper away from the Bunsen burner, or I might set fire to our school. Sigh. I would let him skateboard every day if he asked me to be his girlfriend.
Don't make the same mistakes you made in junior high. Keep all your secrets safe and fashionable in handmade journals by Ex Libris Anonymous, made from recycled textbooks and old library books.

Jake For Less
Shop Jake is luxe-meets-flawlessness. They feature the designers to wear. To put it very simply: you could leave the house wearing your scrunchie from eighth grade, a smear of night-before makeup, and a Phillip Lim or Mayle piece from ShopJake—and you'd be unstoppable. ( p.s. Don't miss their new fresh to def Marc Jacobs pieces!)

A Chocoholic's Delight
We’re true romantics. We believe in the mystery of love. The whole fizzy pop electric butterflies first kiss. But our track record is more "Bridget Jones" than "The Notebook." But as long as we have our girlfriends (singletons, dating or married) to venture out to a happy hour of wine and chocolate, we'll be just fine!

Remember that time you went on that cruise, fell overboard, woke up, and decided to start dressing like a dude? Which made things weird when you fell for another dude? Who in turn fell for another chick? Who in turn fell for you, dressed as a dude? Oh wait, that wasn't you … it was Viola in “Twelfth Night.” Whoops, our bad!
